CHAPTER 11
It’s alive, alive!
Andrew offered me his hand, but I wasn’t planning on going full tactile with him yet. He was Andriel now, and I had a lot to learn about that guy. Through my confusion, I needed to focus on finding a way out of here. I had a couple of debts to repay and one vampire’s ass to kick, so I couldn’t get too comfortable in the fae world just yet.
Despite the questions floating in my mind for Andrew, I couldn’t afford the distraction of friendly conversation. It looked like we were in a medieval castle again. Fae and vampires had one thing in common: their love for Count Dracula’s style.
We passed by ten cells on the left, and nine others after my cell on the right. Andrew didn’t say a word as we walked a flight of stairs, which made me nervous. I was mad at him, even hated him, for hiding the truth about who he was, where he’d been, the fact that he was alive all this time, and yet I was eager to hear his voice and feel his touch. Pathetic, right? Was this what Stockholm syndrome felt like? Yes, he’d lied to me about everything, but I couldn’t just erase our years together with a click of my fingers. To be honest, at that moment, I couldn’t feel anything—it was like somebody had hit my head with a rock, and I didn’t understand what was going on around me. I was overwhelmed.
‘Upstairs’ looked like a massive living room for soldiers. Faes, wearing armor and carrying weapons, were spread out all over the place. The moment we stepped foot in there, all heads turned our way. I was uncomfortable and intimidated by so many beautiful, cruel faces staring at me. Also, scared that a panty-dropping desire would sweep me off my feet.
But it didn’t happen. Instead, one of the faes with a long black braid stood up and walked over to us. He stopped in front of me and looked into my eyes without blinking. I stared back. I could play this game all day long when I was a kid, buddy. Staring contests were the only way for my brother and I to win peanut butter. He used to lose all the time, because I mastered the glare.
The fae’s eyes widened a little, and I felt a drop of sweat running down my temple. I’d like to accuse the temperature in the room, but it was clearly the fae’s influence. I didn’t blink. He smiled, then stretched his arm out to me.
“Happy to finally see you home, Summer.”
I mechanically shook his hand and felt a wave of joy coming from Andrew. I guessed this was what he expected me to do.
“I am Marriel, Head of the Guard.”
A local big boy I’d better try to build some trust with, because this guy looked terrifying. Especially when I felt him reaching into my mind like a needle pinching an open nerve. The sensation was painful and overpowering.
